Prayagraj Zone Enjoys a Thumping Victory Over Uttarakhand in the Finals of the CISCE Regional U-14 Cricket Tournament

The successful culmination of all the training, diligence, perseverance, strategy and of course, teamwork! 27th July, 2024 beckoned as the icing on the cake for the teams of the Prayagraj and the Uttarakhand zones, making it to the nail-biting finale of the CISCE Regional U-14 Cricket Tournament. The event kicked off with the Mistress of Ceremonies,Mrs. Linda Gaffneywelcomingthe College Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva, the College Headmaster, Rev. Fr. Melvin Pais, the Additional Administrator, Mr. A. McGowanandthe Senior Staff Coordinator, Mr. Jyoti Dube, as they were escorted by the N.C.C.Cadets and the College Band. No event can progress without seeking the blessings of the Almighty in all humility. Hence, Mrs. M. D’Souza, led the gathering in a select passage from the Bible and followed it up with a special prayer for the well-being of the young champions and all the mentors whose toil and guidance has steered the budding cricketers so far. The Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva then shook hands with both the teams of the Prayagraj and the Uttarakhand zones, encouraging and motivating them to give in their best performance for the highly awaited Finals.Prayagraj won the toss, hence choosing to bowl. Post a superbly played innings by the Prayagraj zone, the Mistress of Ceremonies, Mrs. Linda Gaffney,accorded a warm welcometo the dignitaries of the day namely, the Chief Guest, Justice Vivek Varma, along with his wife, Dr. Ruchika Varma, the Guest of Honour, Dr.(Ms.) Zareen Rizvi, the Zonal Coordinator, and the two special guests,Dr. Umar, a cardiologist in the Nazareth Hospital, and Mr. Abbas Rizvi, a former teacher, an ardent lover of the gentleman’s game and a former BCCI empanelled umpire,as they were escorted to the stage, by the NCC Cadets and the School Band. Mr. J. Dube, next,addressed the gathering, as he introduced the dignitaries to everyone present. The Chief Guest, Honourable Justice Mr. Vivek Varma, born on 29th December, 1969 is a distinguished luminary in the field of jurisprudence. He graduated in Law from the A.P.S. University, Rewa in 1992, enrolling as an advocate in the Allahabad High Court on 4th September, 1992. The excellent work ethics of the Chief Guest, Honourable Justice Mr. Vivek Varmaexplain the array of duties he has handled with panache, in his illustrious career, such as being the Standing Counsel of M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Standing Counsel of Kanpur Nagar Nigam and as the Standing Counsel for the U.P. State Industrial Development Authority. What’s more, he stands true to the College motto, Semper Sursum, Always Aim High as he is an alumnus of St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj. Flowers are a fragrant reminder of how its important to balance delicacy with strength in life. Naturally, a floral welcome of both the Chief Guest, Honourable Justice Mr. Vivek Varma and Guest of Honour, Dr.(Ms.) Zareen Rizvi by the College Principal, Rev.Fr. Walter D’Silva, served to set the right tone. The tough battle between the two zones of Prayagraj and Uttarakhand, left everyone anticipating the outcome of the match.After a pitched battle,victory however was claimed by the Prayagraj zone, as they broke through the score and emerged victorious. The Chief Guest in his speech, emphasised on how hard work is the crucible in which the raw talents of sportspersons get refined and how each tournament is a treat to watch only because of the relentless toil put in by the players and their coaches. He also dwelt on the need to hone one’s skill on a daily basis so that success in any event can only come when you push your boundaries and are ready to let your hunger for excellence drive you towards your goal. In a similar motivational manner, the Guest of Honour, Dr. (Ms.) Zareen Rizvi congratulated both the finalists and asked the players of the Uttarakhand zone to remember that sportsmanship is what really matters.As a mark of respectand gratitude, the College Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva presented mementos to both the dignitaries. The College Choir comprising Joshua B. Masih, Shreesh E. Moses and Kushagra A. Phillip, sang a beautiful rendition, winning the hearts of everyone present. Immediately thereafter, the moment of grand reckoning arrived with the coveted Winner’s trophy being awarded to the Prayagraj zone and the Runner’s-Up trophy being given to the Uttarakhand zone by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva, the Chief Guest, Honourable Justice Vivek Varma and the Guest of Honour, Dr. (Ms.) Zareen Rizvi. The Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva congratulated all the participants of the event for their splendid performance in the tournament, highlighting the importance of hard work, focus and discipline in life, be it sports or any other activity. Quoting Michael Jordan, he instructed the athletes to not get disappointed and lose hope even after losing a match, since losing and winning come hand in hand. A crisp yet comprehensive vote of thanks by the College Captain, Mohd. Sultan, brought the three-day tournament to its finale with the singing of the National Anthem by the entire audience. A sporting event is incomplete without the dedication shown by all the sports coaches and mentors, namely Mr. Shabi Rafique,Organising Secretary of the CISCE Regional Cricket Tournament,Lt. Mr. Azhar Usmani,Mr. Zaheer Abbas (Coach), Mr. Utkarsh Kr. Sharma, Ms. Poonam Singh, Mrs. Pratibha Shukla, Mr. Harshit Gladwin and Mr. Vikas Singh Bisen. Match Summary The expert commentary by Dr. Vishnu Deb and Mr. Tyrone Alberts put some much-needed zing into the entire experience of the Cricket Tournament making it a highly enjoyable affair. Final Match- Held at the College Ground, St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj between Uttarakhand and Prayagraj. -Total runs scored by the Uttarakhand team was 50 at the loss of 5 wickets. -Total runs scored by the Prayagraj team was 55 at the loss of 1 wicket. -The best batsman was Karnaveer Singh from the Prayagraj team who scored a total of 29 runs in 22 balls. -The best bowler was Mohd. Hammad also from the Prayagraj team who took a total of 2 wickets. -The player of the match was Mohd. Hammad from the Prayagraj team. -At the end, the Prayagraj team emerged victorious by 9 wickets. The following awards have been given based on the performance in the tournament. -The best batsman of the tournament is Aditya Yadav from the Agra zone. -The best bowler of the tournament is Mohd. Hammad from the Prayagraj zone. -The man of the tournament is Aditya Yadav from the Agra zone.
