The ASISC Zonal Debate Competition aims at fostering the necessary skills of debating, communicating one’s thoughts into words and confidence in oneself.
The ASISC Zonal Debate Competition hosted by St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj on the 23rd of August, 2024 marked the battle of opposites as 9 different teams for the Senior and Junior Categories both, with 36 participants, clashed with one another, speaking for and against the topic.
The programme commenced with, Sarthak Singh, the President of the Literary Association welcoming the judges, Dr. (Mrs.) Sonal Shankar, Mrs. Suchita Tripathi Mishra, Mr. D. Guha, and the Moderator, Mrs. Divya Raj, escorted by the Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva.
An event as big as such, could never be completed without the blessing of the Almighty, and for that, the Bible Reading was done by Devansh Pandey, followed by a prayer by Shayaan Zaman. A prayer song was then sung by the College Choir.
It was then time to introduce the honourable judges to the audience. Dr. (Mrs.) Sonal Shankar, currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Law, University of Allahabad has a vast teaching experience of over 15 years with over 25 research papers in the national and international journals. Her expertise in the field of education and Law, stands as a testament to her determination and skills. Mrs. Suchita Tripathi Mishra is an able advocate who has been practicing in Civil Education, Service, Constitutional matters, revenue tax, corporate and miscellaneous matters in Allahabad High Court, CAT, DRT, NCLT, and CESTAT for more than 8 years. She is also a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad, High Court unit, Kashiprant. The final judge, Mr. Debanjan Guha, is the Regional Head of Yes Bank Ltd. Sir had been promoted from Branch head to a Cluster Head within one year because of his exemplary performance and has also won multiple International Sales Training Programmes. The Moderator, Mrs. Divya Raj, is a retired teacher of the English Department, of St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj, known for dedicating her life to the art of teaching and nurturing young minds. She has inspired countless students with her deep knowledge and the power of effective communication.
After the introduction of the dignitaries, the rules of the competition were then read by Usmani Abdul Rahman, the General Secretary of the Literary Association.
As the programme headed to its conclusion, it was time for Dr. (Mrs.) Sonal Shankar to address the audience. In her speech, she thanked the host school for inviting her, and talked about exploring ideas. She also pointed out what they could improve and finally encouraged and congratulated all the participants.
With that, the event came to an end, and the results were declared.

In the Senior Category-

· At the 2nd place speaking FOR the motion was Aditya Mishra from St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj.
· At the 2nd place speaking AGAINST the motion was Janavi Singh of St. John’s Co-ed School.
· At the 1st place speaking FOR the motion was Tanmay Pandey from St. John’s Co-ed School.
· At the 1st place speaking AGAINST the motion was Ananya of Girls High School, Prayagraj.
In the Junior Category-
· Topic- Censorship is a necessary evil
· At 3rd place speaking FOR the motion was Anushka Malik from St. Mary’s Convent, Prayagraj.
· At the 3rd place speaking AGAINST the motion was Haya Abbas of Girls High School, Prayagraj.
· At the 2nd place speaking FOR the motion was Indrani Bhattacharya from St. John’s Academy.
· At the 2nd place speaking AGAINST the motion was Shreyanshi Chaudhary of St. Mary’s Convent.
· At the 1st place speaking FOR the motion was Daksh Abhishiktt Lyall from St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj.
· At the 1st place speaking AGAINST the motion was Raghav Mishra from St. Joseph’s College, Prayagraj.
The Vote of Thanks was given by Usmani Abdul Rahman wherein he thanked the Principal, Rev. Fr. Walter D’Silva for organising and looking out for the smooth working of the event, and the judges and the moderator for taking out their valuable time and becoming a part of the event. Special thanks was given to Miss A. J. D’Cruz for nurturing and training the participants and for managing the whole programme.
The event concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
